shop assitant

the approach i made was a bit of a fluke to be honest with you, and i didn't intent it to get as far out as it did. Anyway here's how it went..  i was in an indoor shopping centre and a bit stuck as one of my mates was currently in set talking to some promoters. a couple of minutes went by and that it happened, that sudden feeling, hard to describe but it made me want to approach anybody anywhere sorta thing.
My first thought was to open the current set that my friend had engaged with but it wouldn't be good on his part. Then looking around i saw rackhams and saw this really cute girl who was working there about hb8. what i didn't realize was that she was with another customer at the time, but i opened her (with the mates gone away opener) as i was saying you could tell by the look on her face she was surprised. the conversation went something like :

me - hey, (pause) im stuck in a situation could you help me out
HB - laughs and says ok
me - my mates gone away for the week and left me £100s ...blah blah
HB - ok so what sort of stuff does she like
me - (i hadn't thought of this response) let me describe her to you
she is into fashion (jus said what was a=in my head at the time, but thinking back i could have described some of the HB features on a comical angle)
HB - ok, maybe some jewellery or something
me - quickly responded with ' so whats the best present you've ever bought somebody?'
HB - honestly i don't know
(at this point i was kinda stalling as i didnt know how to follow up after)
i look at her and smile, she starts laughing back
HB - shall i try and ask some of the others
i said yes at this point but i didnt really know what else to say
so she leads me to the till where there was another girl i talked to both of them for a bit explaining situation and basically fluffing the convo up, and eventually two other girls join in suggesting possible gifts and stuff.
(i know i could have done something here to advance the interaction but what?)
so eventually i take to this decent looking girl, probably because she was investing more energy into the convo or me mayb? but anyway she starts suggesting i buy a bag for her and leads me into the bag section. and basically after that i stray away from my objective to get a phone number. the funny thing was she recommended and wrote me down different products from different shops.

(i noticed through out the interactions i hadn't kinoed at all although i saw ios from at least two of the HBs)
